Rainbow Wahine Surge Past Mustangs

Box Score

DALLAS—The University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine basketball got back on the winning track with a 60-53 victory Saturday at Moody Coliseum. The Rainbow Wahine, winners of six of their last seven games improved to 16-5 overall and 9-3 in the WAC.

UH needed a second half comeback to rebound from Thursday's loss to No. 7 Louisiana Tech and to snap SMU's (9-14, 4-9 WAC) three-game winning streak.

The Rainbow Wahine scored the game's final seven points and held the Mustangs scoreless for the final four minutes to pull off the win. UH trailed by six at halftime and as many as nine points in the second half.

UH played most of the first half without starting point guard Janka Gabrielova who picked up her second foul just seven minutes into the game. She came back with a vengeance in the second half, when she scored 12 of her game-high 18 points. Karena Greeny recorded her third double-double this season with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Chelsea Wagner added 11 points.

UH, playing its fourth straight road game, won despite a miserable stretch in the first half. The Rainbow Wahine scored the first six points of the game then immediately fell into a funk. UH went scoreless for more than nine minutes as the Lady Mustangs opened a 14-6 lead. The Rainbow Wahine eventually found their offense and tied the score, 20-20, with three minutes left in the first frame. SMU responded by closing the half with an 8-2 run to lead, 28-22, at the break.

The second half was a see-saw affair with two ties and nine lead changes during a seven-minute stretch. UH took the lead for good, 55-53, on a driving bucket by Wagner with 4:41 left, then picked up its defense as the Mustangs failed to score the rest of they way.

SMU's leading scorer Andrea Cossey was held to just seven points and was shut out in the second half. Kenni Patton led the Mustangs with 15 points.

Hawaii returns home to face Tulsa on Thursday, February 9. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
