Rainbow Wahine Hold on to Defeat No. 23 San Diego State

SAN DIEGO - The University of Hawai`i women's softball team scored four times over the first three innings and held on to knock off No. 23 San Diego State University this morning in the first game of the Aztec Invitational.

UH second baseman Natalie Gonzales got the Rainbow Wahine (2-3) on the board in the first as she tripled to right center and came around to score on freshman Tracie Uchima's RBI single to right.

The Aztecs (3-3) committed three errors in the game and one of them cost them two unearned runs in the UH second.

Hawai`i added its final run in the third as shortstop Kate Judd doubled to left and came home on April Crowell's RBI single to center to give UH a 4-0 lead.

But the Aztecs rallied late coming up with two runs in the fifth inning as catcher Amber Grahlman doubled down the left field line. Jennifer Funk entered the game as a pinch-runner for Grahlman. The next batter was Janna Kovensky who drew a walk. Kellie Nordhagen cleared the bases with a two-run double to right field.

San Diego State got its final run in the sixth as sophomore Kelcy Murphy smacked an RBI single to drive home Sarah Hershman.

UH's Sheri Oronoz (2-1) picked up her second-straight complete-game victory allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out two and walking a pair.

SDSU's Bro DeSanta (1-2) took the loss for the Aztecs as she went only four innings giving up all four runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out seven and walking one. She was relieved in the fifth by Jessi Green who went the final three frames.

The Rainbow Wahine were led offensively by senior outfielder Stacie Hirano who went 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored

UH takes on Missouri later today. The tournament concludes Saturday with UH taking on Missouri in the morning and finishing against host San Diego State in the afternoon.
