RIVERSIDE, CALIF. - The University of Hawai`i softball team notched its first win of the season with a 2-1 come-from-behind win in the first game of a doubleheader at UC Riverside. The Highlanders pulled out the second game in the bottom of the seventh inning, 4-3.
UH's Sheri Oronoz (1-1) picked up the complete-game victory in the opener limiting UCR to three hits and an unearned run. She out-dueled UCR's Monique Baeza (0-1). Both pitched scoreless until the seventh inning.
UH shortstop Kate Judd led off the seventh with a single to left and came around on Stacey Porter 2-run shot to center field.
UCR (1-1) added a run in the bottom of the seventh when Brandy Chavez led off with a double to center field and came around to score on a Judd throwing error.
In the nightcap, the Rainbow Wahine (1-3) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Stacie Hirano lead off and went to second on a two-base throwing error by UCR second baseman Karlie Burneleit. Judd popped out before Porter singled home Hirano and advanced to second on the throw. She would go to third on Trisha Ramos' ground out and then score on a passed ball.
But the lead was short-lived as the Highlanders added single runs in the fourth and fifth to tie the game.
Hawai`i would recapture the lead in the sixth as Natalie Gonzales reached on an error by the left fielder and moved to second on a wild pitch. Hirano then sacrificed Gonzales to third where she then scored on Judd's double to center.
UH led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh when UCR scored twice to pick up the victory. Andrea Cunningham led off the seventh with a single to second and was pinch-run for by Baeza. Allison Solis then sacrificed Baeza to second, advanced to third when Burneleit fly ball was mishandled in right field by Justina Kahaku. UH's Melissa Coogan, who came in relief of Paula Blanning in the fifth, then got a line out to hold the runners at second and third setting the stage for Suzanne Dallas whose two-run single gave UCR the victory, 4-3.
UCR's Jenell Jackson (1-0) picked up the complete-game victory scattering four hits and allowing three unearned runs while striking out two. UH' Coogan (0-2) suffered the loss going the final 2.2 innings.
The Rainbow Wahine head to San Diego for the Aztec Invitational Friday and Saturday where they'll play both Missouri and San Diego State twice.
