HONOLULU -- The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (5-6) fell to the Brigham Young Cougars (4-10) 7-6 in the series opener at the Les Murakami Stadium Thursday. The ticketed attendance was 2,329 with BYU's Jeff Mousser picking up the win. William Quaglieri got the loss for Hawai`i.

Brent Cook continued to stay hot, going 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored after going 12-for-14 in the UCLA series last week. Brian Bock also went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in the second inning.

The Rainbows fell behind 2-0 in the first inning on a Rob Itri home run. Itri ended the game 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

After Bock tied the game with his homer, BYU got three runs in the top of the third inning. Hawai`i responded with four runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead at 6-5. The Cougars then scored on a Doug Jackson RBI in the fourth and then on a Dave Jensen RBI in the seventh. The pitching then took over as the teams failed to score again and Brigham Young won 7-6.

Hawai`i will play the Cougars again tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. with UH's Aaron Pribble and BYU's Ryan Adams scheduled to be the starters. The teams will then play the series finale at 12:05 p.m. on Saturday.
