HONOLULU—Lindsey Maynard's hit a driving layup with a second remaining to give Rice a 55-54 win over Hawaii Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center. With the loss the Rainbow Wahine (17-6, 10-4 WAC) fell a half game behind the Lady Owls (17-7, 11-4 WAC) in the battle for second place in the conference.
The Rainbow Wahine trailed by six points with less than a minute remaining but made a furious comeback to actually take the lead with 12 seconds left in the contest. Janka Gabrielova drove to the hoop and banked it off the glass to give UH a brief 54-53 lead, capping an 8-1 run. A pair of consecutive 3-pointers by Karena Greeny and Chelsea Wagner started the rally.
Rice regrouped and on the last possession gave it to Maynard, who had missed all nine of her shots in the game . The sophomore guard dribbled to the right wing and hit her only shot of the game with just one second.
Maynard and fellow starting guard Kara Ligget were scoreless from the floor for the first 30 minutes of the game, combining to miss 14 shots. But Liggett got hot at the end, hitting her final four shots to help the Lady Owls overcome a nine-point second half deficit. She finished with a team-high 11 points.
UH, which struggled to shoot 20 percent in its first meeting at Rice, again found the iron unkind. The Rainbow Wahine missed 12 of their first 14 shots of the game and finished just 31 percent from the floor. UH also struggled at the line where they went 13-of-22.
Chelsea Wagner led Hawaii with 13 points and a career-high nine rebounds. Greeny and freshman Jade Abele added 11 points each.
UH next plays its final regular season road games when it travels to Fresno State (Feb. 21, 7 p.m. PST) and Nevada (Feb. 24, 2 p.m. PST).
