Hawai`i Falls to Sacramento State; Yamashita Pitches Well in Relief

HONOLULU -- The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (2-5) fell to the Sacramento State Hornets (2-1) 5-3 in the final game of the teams' three-game series at the Les Murakami Stadium. The Hornets' Chris Kinsey picked up the win with Ricky Bauer getting the loss. 2,470 tickets were issued for the game.

The Rainbows got strong performances out of their two pitchers, who allowed just three earned runs in the game. Ricky Bauer, the starter, pitched six innings, giving up just five hits and three earned runs while striking out seven batters. The freshman started out the game hot, retiring the first 12 batters before falling into trouble in the fifth inning. Yamashita then came in relief and gave up just one hit and no runs in three innings of work, striking out three.

Hawai`i took an early 2-0 lead in the game when Danny Mocny and Kevin Gilbride drove in a run. But Sacramento State responded in the fifth inning as Casey Fuller drove in a run and an error by Brent Cook gave up two more. Tim Reimer then drove in another run to cap the four-run inning. The Hornets then got another run on a double steal in the sixth inning. Gregg Omori was able to drive in one run for Hawai`i in the seventh but it wasn't enough as the Hornets won 5-3.

Leading the Rainbow bats were Danny Mocny, Gregg Omori and Scooter Martines. Mocny hit 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. Omori and Martines both hit 2-for-5 with Omori driving in one.

Hawai`i will next face the UCLA Bruins in a three-game series starting at 6:35 p.m. on Friday, February 15. The Bruins are 4-3 thus far on the year.
