Top Ranked Rainbow Wahine Take Out Nevada in Three

HONOLULU - There was no let down after UH moved to the No. 1 spot as the University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (22-0, 10-0 Western Athletic Conference) defeated the Nevada Wolf Pack (18-6, 7-4 WAC) 30-17, 30-11 and 30-17 in front of a crowd of 7,552 at the Stan Sheriff Center Friday.

Kim Willoughby led the way for Hawai`i with 17 kills, nine digs, three aces and three blocks while hitting .500. Lily Kahumoku added 11 kills and 12 digs while Lauren Duggins had a great match hitting .875 with seven kills on just eight attempts, eight digs and four blocks. Maja Gustin played well in just two games of action, putting down five kills and three blocks.

The teams started out the first game trading points before Hawai`i went on a 5-0 run on the strength of Margaret Vakasausau's serve to go up 11-6. But Nevada quickly responded with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 11. Willoughby then got the serve and ran off four points, including two aces, to take UH into the media timeout with a 15-11 lead. Willoughby continued her tough serve as she added another ace while running up the score to 19-11 before she was done. The Rainbow Wahine continued to pour it on, winning game one 30-17.

After starting out down 2-1, UH went on a 9-1 run to go up 10-3, forcing Nevada coach Devin Scruggs to call a timeout. Hawai`i kept rolling, as they outhit the Wolf Pack .467 to -.122 in their 30-11 game two win.

The Rainbow Wahine continued to cruise through in game three, as they were able to play all available players, taking the match with a 30-17 win in game three.

Jacqueline Randolph played well for the Wolf Pack, knocking in six kills, while Laura Wooley led the way with nine digs. All-WAC performer Michelle More was held to just four kills and a .000 hitting percentage.

Tomorrow Hawai`i will host Boise State at 7 p.m. in a match that will be preceded by the alumnae match at 5 p.m. Sunday, UH will host No. 4 Stanford, the defending national champions, in front of a sold out crowd at the Stan Sheriff Center. Sunday's match will also celebrate senior night as it will be the last regular season home match for Margaret Vakasausau, Jennifer Carey and Hedder Ilustre.
