Rainbow Wahine Rally for Road Win at San Jose State, 4-0

Box Score

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Reigning Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week Natasha Kai scored a goal and assisted on two others as the Hawaii (9-7-2) women's soccer team moved to 5-2-0 in league play with a 4-0 rout of San Jose State (3-10-5, 1-4-2 WAC).

The Rainbows took the lead at 12:52 when freshman Carmen Calpo, starting at striker in place of Arlene Devitt, made good on an assist from Kai for her fourth goal of the season. Kai created the scoring chance when she stripped a San Jose State defender of the ball in the Spartans defensive third, and turned and made a run down the left flank to the end line. Kai then slotted the ball to Calpo at the center of the Spartan penalty box, who sent her left-footed shot past SJSU keeper Erin Lavey.

Hawaii took the 1-0 advantage into halftime, despite being outshot, 10-to-3 by the Spartans. Rainbow keeper Mahie Atay stood strong in the first period, posting six saves to maintain the shutout.

After the intermission, Hawaii quickly put-in their second score of the night when Mia Moe took a pass from Kai and placed a right-footed shot into the lower left-hand corner of the net. Kai posted her second assist of the night when she again ran the left flank before stopping, turning and slotting a right-footed ground pass to the wide-open Moe. Moe took the centering pass from Kai, controlled, and sent her shot into the net.

Next for Hawaii was Kai's goal off assists from Natalie Groenewoud and Erin Quattromani. Quattromani initiated the scoring chance with her restart after a San Jose State player was whistled for a foul outside of her own penalty box. Quattromani lofted a right-footed service into the center of the box, where Groenewoud headed a shot that deflected off of the cross bar and to the feet of Kai.

Kai's goal was her ninth in WAC play, tying her for the league record for most conference scores in a season.

She has extended her school season records for points and goals to 35 and 15, respectively.

Just over 11 minutes after Kai's score the Wahine received a score from senior co-captain Wanette Miyashiro. Miyashiro chased down a well-placed pass from Moe that was chipped over the top of the Spartan back line and into space at the top of the SJSU penalty box.

After running onto the ball, Miyashiro dribbled past Lavey, and calmly sent a left-footer into the open net. The score was her second goal, giving Moe her third assist of the year.

Next up for Hawaii is their final regular-season match at Fresno State on Sunday. With identical 5-2-0 league marks, the Rainbows and Bulldogs are playing for seeding at next week's WAC Championship Tournament in Houston.

Even if Hawaii wins, the best seed they could clinch would be the third spot, meaning that they would need to win three consecutive matches to capture the league championship.

The Bulldogs could take the league's second seed and a first-round bye with a win over Hawaii.
