Kai, Quattromani Lead Hawai'i to 5-1 Rout of Boise State

Box Score

HONOLULU - Scoring outbursts by Natasha Kai and Erin Quattromani and a pair of record-setting assists from Arlene Devitt lifted the Rainbow Wahine soccer team to a crucial Western Athletic Conference win over visiting Boise State, 5-1, to move another win closer to clinching their third league championship tournament berth in four seasons.

Kai, a freshman striker from Kahuku, Oahu, tied a school record for most goals in a match with her second hat trick performance of the season. With 12 goals on the season, Kai matches the Hawai`i record with was set by her striker running mate, Devitt.

Kai netted her game-winner just 29 seconds after the intermission when she benefitted from a fine pass from Devitt. Devitt created the scoring chance when she intercepted a Boise State pass, turned and slotted a through ball to a Kai who drove 45 yards to goal and dribbled past Bronco keeper Amy Ortmann before pushing an easy right footer into the open net.

Rainbow scoring leader Kai struck again at 66:49 off an assist from Quattromani to give Hawai`i the 3-1 advantage. Quattromani sent a left-footed corner kick to the far post where Kai leapt high to head in her second score of the night. Kai's final goal was perhaps her most thrilling. Kai ran-onto Sasha Araya-Schraner's restart after a Boise State foul and dove headlong to head the ball past Ortmann to complete her hat trick. Kai came within a shot of matching her school and WAC record for shots in a contest, ripping-off 13 attempts.

Quattromani, a senior midfielder from St. Louis, Mo., opened the evening's scoring at 15:32 when she made good off a Devitt assist from 12 yards out. Devitt initiated the scoring opportunity when she slotted the ball from the left side of the Boise State penalty box to Quattromani, who had cleared herself some space in the middle of the box.

Sophomore striker Pam Fong set-up Quattromani's second score when she earned her team a penalty kick after being taken down in the Boise State penalty box on a breakaway. Quattromani stepped-up and drilled a right-footed shot inside the left goal post.

With her two assists in the win, Devitt now has seven on the season and 17 for her career, both highs for the Hawai`i soccer program.

The Rainbow Wahine will close-out their 2002 home schedule on Sunday with a WAC match against Nevada. The contest, set for a 5:00 p.m. kick-off, will serve as the Wahine's "Senior Night." Hawai`i will bid farewell to seniors Wanette Miyashiro, Noelle Takemoto, Jennifer Churchill and Quattromani in a special ceremony following the match.
