ROAD WARRIORS SWEEP MATCH, SERIES AT NO. 2 STANFORD: Miladinovic Posts 10 Kills, Nine Blocks to Spark Hawaii

Box Score

PALO ALTO, Calif. – The University of Hawaii Warrior volleyball team (5-2, 2-0 MPSF) capped its first road test of the season with a resounding sweep of the second-ranked Stanford Cardinal, 33-31, 30-25 and 30-28, thanks to the efforts of senior All-American middle blocker Dejan Miladinovic before another largely pro-Hawaii crowd at Burnham Pavillion.

Miladinovic, a 6-foot-7 three-time All-MPSF selection from Kraljevo, Serbia, was dominant in the middle, putting-down 10 kills on a .563 hitting percentage while also posting nine total blocks. Miladinovic's performance was key as 2001 AVCA National Player of the Year Costas Theocharidis got-off to slow start, waiting until Hawaii trailed 25-26 in game one before registering his first kill of the night.

Theocharidis got back on his horse in game two and led all players with 14 kills in the win. He also posted a season-high three service aces and had six digs and three block assists.

Warrior junior middle blocker Brian Nordberg also played well, recording eight kills with no errors in 10 attempts to register a .800 attack percentage.

Hawaii jumped-out to a 8-4 lead in game one following a couple of tough jump serves from Theocharidis, resulting in a service ace and an Eyal Zimet kill off an overpass of a Theocharidis serve. The quick run prompted Stanford coach Don Shaw to call an early timeout. But setter Kimo Tuyay helped Hawaii establish a balanced attack, as five Warriors-Miladinovic, Theocharidis, Jose Delgado, Nordberg, and Zimet-registered four kills apiece in the game one win.

Game two saw Hawaii out-hit Stanford .389-to-.222 en route to taking the set, 30-25.

In the evening's third and final set, the Warriors again jumped-out to a quick lead, posting a 5-1 advantage to prompt another Cardinal timeout. But six Stanford service errors and five more kills from Theocharidis proved to be enough to seal the win and the series sweep.

Hawaii continues its road trip and its conference schedule with a pair of matches at Pacific this Friday and Saturday. Both contests will start at 7:00 p.m., and will be broadcast back to the 50th state on KCCN (1420 AM).
