HONOLULU—
Karena Greeny had a career-high 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead Hawaii to a 69-53 win over Fresno State Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center. The game was a milestone for head coach Vince Goo who picked up his 300th career victory.
Hawaii (13-4, 6-2 WAC) struggled at times but powered its way on the free throw line and on the boards to improve Goo's record to 300-128 in 15 seasons.
The Wahine won despite a slow start and an early injury to one of its key starters. UH staggered out of the gates, missing eight of its first nine shots to trail 9-3 in the first five minutes. Fresno State out-shot and out-rebounded UH in the first half, but the Wahine managed a 27-23 lead by outscoring the Bulldogs (8-11, 3-6) 10-0 at the line.
UH would score seven of the first nine points in the second half, capped by a Greeny 3-pointer, to extend its lead to nine. Greeny stepped up in the absence of April Atuaia who injured her left knee three minutes into the game. The sophomore guard left the court on her power but did not return to game and her status for Saturday's game at San Jose State is unknown.
Fresno State surged back to tie the score, 38-38 with 12 minutes left in the game. UH responded by scoring the next seven points and never looked back. UH out-rebounded the Bulldogs 26-10 in the second frame and outscored Fresno State 23-2 at the line. FSU did not shoot its first free throw until 5:30 left in the game and attempted just three free throws to UH's 31.
Christen Roper and Natasja Allen each chipped in 14 points for the Wahine, while Janka Gabrielova had 10 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Lindsay Logan led Fresno State with 15 points.
UH takes its three-game win streak on the road and will face San Jose State on Saturday, February 2. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. PST.
