HONOLULU—Cheryl Ford scored 24 points and added 17 rebounds to lead No. 13 Louisiana Tech to a 67-55 win over Hawaii Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Wahine saw their six game win streak snapped and dropped to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the WAC.
The Lady Techsters seized control of the game early and fended off any late comeback hopes for UH to win their ninth straight and improve to 11-3 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the WAC.
Louisiana Tech came out of the gates from the get-go. After spotting UH the first bucket of the game, the Lady Techsters scored the next seven points and never looked back. LTU never let the Wahine get into rhythm offensively, while on the other end UH couldn't contain Ford who nearly had a double-double (17 points and nine rebounds) by half. The Lady Techsters, who led by as many as 21 points, shot 53 percent in the first half and led 40-24 at the break.
The Wahine picked up their play after intermission and a 9-2 run in the early minutes of the second brought the team within nine, 42-33. UH shot the ball decidedly better in the second (48 percent), while holding LTU to just 31 percent shooting.
The Lady Techsters however, never let their lead shrink to less than double digits again and continued to stay aggressive on the boards where they finished with a 45-29 advantage, including 22 on the offensive glass.
Amber Obaze added 22 points and five rebounds for Louisiana Tech. Three Wahine scored in double digits for the Wahine led by Natasja Allen with 13 points and seven rebounds. Janka Gabrielova chipped in 11 points and six assists, while Chelsea Wagner finished with 10.
UH looks to get back on the winning track on the road where they will face Rice (January 17, 7 p.m. CST) and Tulsa (January 19, 2 p.m. CST).
