MORAGA, Calif. – The Wahine soccer team found its first match of their current three-game road trip a tough one, as they fell, 4-1, to 24th-ranked Saint Mary's in Moraga, Calif. this evening.
. The contest was started about 30-minutes late, due to a scheduling conflict. The second linesman for the match was refereeing the Saint Mary's men's game, and had to rush down from the school's other soccer complex to work the Wahine-Gaels game. The men's contest versus UC-Irvine went through double-overtime, delaying the arrival even more. Once action was started, the Gaels wasted little time in denting the scoreboard, when Sarah Rae Takekawa put a head onto Katie Frattone's centering pass at 14:03. The spirited Wahine responded quickly, when Arlene Devitt drilled a left-footed shot from about 15-yards out to tie the match at 24:00. Hawaii senior Veronica Flores's shot was deflected to Devitt to initiate the scoring play. Flores was credited with the assist. Saint Mary's scored again just moments before half time, when Jan Belzer cracked a right-footed shot inside the far post from about 30-yards out. The long range shot arched over Wahine keeper Erin Chow to give the Gaels the 2-1 lead. Shauna Rech scored at 51:01 off another Katie Frattone assist to put Saint Mary's up, 3-1.
The Gaels got a favorable call on an incidental hand ball in the Hawaii penalty box by a UH defender to set-up the fourth and final Saint Mary's goal. Wahine senior defender Carmel Hurley, attempting to clear a free ball, had the ball roll-up and knock her in the hand to warrant the foul call.
The whistle set-up a penalty kick for Katie Sticinski, with just about a minute remaining in the match. Sticinski went inside the right goalpost to sneak her shot past diving Wahine keeper Jennifer Churchill.
Churchill had a strong outing for the Wahine, allowing just the two goals while her team was outshot 11-to-nothing in the second half.
The Wahine will continue their road trip Sunday, at Sacramento State, before completing their trip with a match at No. 6 California on Monday.
