CHENEY, Wash.—The University of Hawai'i Wahine soccer team lost its first game of the season today, 2-1, in overtime against Eastern Washington at the EWU Sports and Recreation Center. The Wahine dropped to 3-1, while the Eagles improved to 1-3.
Freshman Liz Hail tapped the ball in for the game-winner five minutes into the second overtime to seal the Eagles' first win of the season.
Eastern Washington senior Deszeray Dougherty converted a penalty kick for the Eagles with four minutes left in regulation to force the game into overtime.
Freshman midfielder Natalie Groenewoud came off the bench to give the Wahine a 1-0 lead early in the second half with a hard shot from the middle off an assist by fellow freshman Joelle Sugai.
Up next for the Wahine is the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Festival on Sept. 13-15 at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Wahine face UC Riverside on Thursday at 7 p.m.
