HONOLULU—The University of Hawaii Wahine basketball team got off to a hot start and never looked back in a 71-50 win over Illinois-Chicago on the final day of the Tesoro Invitational Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH finished as the runner-up behind tournament champion Baylor, who captured the championship with a 62-43 win over the Flames on Saturday.
The Wahine (5-2) hit nine of its first 11 shots and staked a double-digit lead seven minutes into the game. The Flames, meanwhile, hit just 2-of-12 to start the game and found themselves in a 24-4 hole just halfway through the first frame.
UH led 42-23 by halftime and cruised in the second half as all 11 active players saw action. The Wahine shot 54 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the Flames, 33-20.
Junior forward Natasja Allen had 13 of her game-high 21 points by half and finished with 21 points. Allen was named to the all-tournament team (her third straight honor this season), as was April Atuaia who finished with 10 points and 8 rebounds. Christen Roper had 11 points and eight rebounds, while Janka Gabrielova recorded a career-high nine assists and had no turnovers.
Also joining Allen and Atuaia on the all-tournament team were Zsuzsa Tarnai of Illinois-Chicago, Sheila Lambert of Baylor and MVP Danielle Crockrom.
