BOISE, Idaho—The University of Hawaii Wahine basketball team hit the road for the first time this season and came out a 61-48 winner over Boise State before 1,015 Friday at The Pavilion. UH used a stalwart defensive effort to win their conference opener and spoil the Broncos WAC debut.
In the first-ever meeting between the teams, Hawaii (8-2, 1-0 WAC) held Boise State to 48 points, a season low point total for Wahine opponents. Boise State (4-7, 0-1) missed its first nine attempts of the game and shot just 34 percent for the game, including 3-of-18 from behind the arc. UH also out-rebounded the Broncos 46-32 and were led by April Atuaia who had a career-high 16 boards.
Both teams game out sluggish, combining to miss 12 of their first 13 shots. The Wahine however got into gear first and scored the game's first eight points. The Broncos went scoreless for the first six minutes but eventually went on an 11-0 run to take the lead. UH however weathered the storm and led 22-18 at the break.
The Wahine never trailed in the second half, and sealed the game on the free throw line, where they finished 16-of-19 (84 percent). The Broncos on the other hand went to the line just five times.
Natasja Allen led the team with 15 points, her tenth straight game in double digits. Christen Roper added 12 and Karena Greeny 10. Christa Peterson led Boise State with 24 points.
The Wahine next travel to El Paso where they will take on the UTEP Miners on Sunday, December 30. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. MST.
