HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i Wahine basketball used a torrid start to defeat Oklahoma State, 72-62, on the final day of the Panda Travel Rainbow Wahine Classic Sunday at the Stan Sheirff Center. The Wahine captured third place in the tournament and improved their record to 4-1 on the season.
Hawaii stormed out of the gates hitting 11 of its first 12 shots to build a 25-10 lead. The Wahine shot 77 percent from the field in the first half and led 42-27 by the break.
UH led by as many as 20 points in the second frame and never looked back. The Wahine finished with 58 percent shooting from the floor, including 8-of-14 from behind the 3-point arc.
Janka Gabrielova, who hit 8-of-9 for the game, started UH's hot shooting by scoring the team's first nine points. Gabrielova finished with a game-high 19 points and added three assists. Sophomore guard April Atuaia also had a huge game with 17 points, 13 rebounds and a career-high eight assists.
UH won despite getting limited action from starting center Christen Roper, who played just 14 minutes due to foul trouble. All-tournament team member Natasja Allen held up the Wahine in the paint by logging 35 minutes and scoring 14 points.
In the championship game tournament MVP Lindsey Yamasaki had 25 points and 10 rebounds as No. 8 Stanford captured its fourth Rainbow Wahine Classic by defeating No. 23 Penn State, 90-68.
The Wahine next host Baylor and Illinois-Chicago in the Tesoro Invitational, Dec. 7–9. Hawai'i will face Baylor on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. in the tournament opener.
