HONOLULU -- The Warrior defense forced two turnovers that resulted in 12 points and the lead in the second half, but it wasn't enough to beat Boise State in the final Western Athletic Conference game Nov. 10 at Aloha Stadium.
A season-high crowd of 45,012 saw Boise State (6-4, 5-2 WAC) outlast Hawai'i (6-3, 5-3 WAC), 28-21, take sole possession of second place in the league standings and remain in the hunt for a bowl game bid.
Justin Ayat kicked three field goals, one to tie the game at six, but Boise State's David Mikell took the ensuing kickoff and dashed 98 yards down the Bronco sideline for a touchdown and a 13-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Boise State quarterback Ryan Dinwddie connected with Lou Fanucchi for 43 yards to the Warrior 6-yard line that set up another Boise State touchdown with 24 seconds left in the first half. The scoring pass from Dinwiddie to Brock Forsey gave the Broncos a 20-9 lead going into the locker room. After the break, the Warrior defense took over. Two interceptions and a fumble recovery led to two Warrior touchdowns. Cornerback Kelvin Millhouse intercepted Dinwiddie to set up a three-play, 50-yard drive that ended with a touchdown pass from Nick Rolovich to Ashley Lelie.
On the ensuing possession, Boise State's Brock Forsey fumbled the ball and Hyrum Peters recovered it for the Warriors to set up a touchdown rush by Thero Mitchell to put Hawai'i in the lead, 21-20, for the first time since the first quarter, heading into the fourth.
The Warriors had opportunities to score, but two missed field goals allowed Boise State to remain within striking distance and Forsey did the rest, gaining 31 yards on four carries on the final series, including a 4-yard run for the winning touchdown with 3:15 left to play. Hawai'i got the ball back but was unable to convert on fourth-and-18.
Next week the Warriors meet Miami (Ohio) in a non-conference game on Nov. 17. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Aloha Stadium.
