TULSA, Okla. -- The No. 13 University of Hawai'i Wahine volleyball team (10-4, 3-0) defeated the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (4-7, 1-4) 30-19, 30-9 and 30-22 at the Reynolds Center Saturday to finish their long road trip 4-0 without losing a game.
The Wahine had a great match as a team, hitting .505 to Tulsa's .143. They had only one error in the first two games combined. Kim Willoughby led the team with 27 kills and an amazing .649 hitting percentage. Maja Gustin added 12 kills and a .632 hitting percentage while Lauren Duggins had eight kills, five blocks and a .545 hitting percentage. Defensive specialist Hedder Ilustre led the Wahine with 11 digs.
Hawai'i started out well as they easily took the first game 30-19. In game 2, the Wahine jumped out to a 26-7 lead. The Golden Hurricane came back to score a couple more points before UH took the game 30-9. The game marked the first time in rally-scoring that the Wahine were able to hold an opponent to a single digit score and the first time they went through a game without a hitting error.
Tulsa came out stronger in the third game holding the Wahine lead at 9-6. But Hawai'i was ready to end their long road trip as they jumped on a 7-2 run to extend their lead to 16-8. The Golden Hurricane continued to compete, cutting the lead again to 21-15 before Hawai'i ended the match with a 30-22 game 3 win.
The Wahine will now come home and face two more WAC opponents at the Stan Sheriff Center. First UTEP will come in for a match on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. Hawai'i will then host SMU on Sunday, Oct. 14, with a 4 p.m. start time.
