Houston -- The No. 13 University of Hawai'i Wahine volleyball team (8-4) defeated the University of Houston (5-8) 30-22, 30-18, 30-10 at the Hofheinz Pavilion Wednesday.
The difference between the teams was as evident as the stats showed, with Hawai'i hitting .376 to Houston's -.018. Kim Willoughby led Hawai'i with 24 kills and 13 digs. Lauren Duggins had one of her best matches of the year with 12 kills and nine, while hitting .526. Maja Gustin also played well with seven kills, seven digs, two blocks and two aces on the night. The Wahine were also able to keep Houston's All-America candidate Jennifer Wittenburg to four kills and a -.067 hitting percentage.
The two teams started out close in game 1 before the Wahine took a 22-15 lead after a short run. Houston was able to trade sideouts but it wasn't enough as Hawai'i won the game 30-22.
After winning game 2 pretty easily at 30-18, the Wahine had their most dominant game of the season, running out to a 18-5 lead before winning the final game 30-10.
Hawai'i will now face Rice University on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. CST in their second conference match. They will then head to Tulsa, Okla., for a 7 p.m. match with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Saturday, Oct. 6.
