WAHINE SOCCER ROUTS MINERS IN RECORD-BREAKING WIN

Box Score

HONOLULU – The Wahine soccer team has literally had a tough road to go this season, Playing at home for just the third time in 12 contests this year, the Wahine came through with a big win, defeating Western Athletic Conference rival UTEP, 5-1, while matching or breaking five school records.

Leading the way for Hawai'i was sophomore All-WAC striker Arlene Devitt, who scored two goals and posted two assists on the night. Devitt's six offensive points set a new Hawai'i record, while her two scores tied the program record.

Devitt's first score came at 29:12, equalizing the score after UTEP's Holly Cohen had scored some six minutes prior. Devitt ran onto Veronica Flores' slotted ball and finished the attack with a left-footed shot inside the far post from about six yards out. The assist was Flores' team-leading fourth assist.

The Wahine scored again at 33:09, when Devitt slotted a perfect ball across the UTEP penalty box to a streaking Tiffany Makue, who slammed a left-footer just under the cross bar from about 15 yards out.

After the intermission, Devitt picked-off where she left off, finding the net again at 81:40 when she ran onto a long through ball from freshman midfielder Joelle Sugai. Sugai intercepted a UTEP pass, making a one touch pass to Devitt, who turned and fired with a left-footed rocket inside the near post.

Hawai'i all-time leading scorer Jennifer Starsiak scored just about two minutes later when she ran onto a header flick from Devitt and sent a right-footed shot past Miners' keeper Katie Gilmore.

The Wahine capped their three-goal run at 86:46 when defender Liz Lusk leapt and put a head on a Starsiak corner kick. The goal was the first of Lusk's collegiate career.

The 15 offensive points set a new program record for the Wahine, while the five goals and five assists each tied Hawai'i records. The former high for points (13) was set against St. Mary's on Sept. 6, 1998. The previous goals record was set on Sept. 14, 1998, when the Wahine defeated TCU at Ala Wai Field. Tonight's match marks the third time the Wahine have posted five assists in a match.

Devitt's six points broke the record set when former Wahine Dawn Dasher posted five points against St. Mary's on Sept. 6, 1998. The goals were her sixth and seventh of the campaign.

The Wahine return to action on Sunday, when they host WAC power SMU, at 5:00 p.m. at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. ..
