HONOLULU -- The No. 12 Rainbow Wahine (22-4, 12-0) defeated San Jose State (19-6, 8-4) 30-13, 30-21, 30-11 in front of 6,211 at the Stan Sheriff Center Thursday night.
Hawai`i got contibutions from all over, but were still led by the nation's leader in kills, Kim Willoughby, who had 19 kills and nine digs while hitting .400. Maja Gustin also hit .400 with 15 kills. Nohea Tano just missed a triple-double with eight kills, seven digs and seven blocks, while Lauren Duggins also had a good all around match with five kills, nine digs and five blocks. Hedder Illustre provided great defense from the back row, tallying a match-high 11 digs.
The win was the Wahine's 19th straight and 51st straight in WAC play, dating back to 1998. Hawai`i has secured the regular season conference title and the top seed in this year's WAC tournament, which will be played in San Jose, Calif., on Nov. 15-18.
The Wahine breezed through the first game 30-13. San Jose setter Savannah Smith went down with an injury on a play at the net early in the second game, but the Spartans kept fighting, pulling the score to 24-19 before the Hawai`i took the second game 30-20. From there, the Wahine just started to pull away, as Duggins served 11 straight points in game 3, en route to a 30-11 win.
Tommorow night will be the Wahine's last regular season match at the Stan Sheriff Center as they will host the Fresno State Bulldogs at 7 p.m. The match will be preceded by the Alumnae match, which begins at 5 p.m. It will also be senior night tommorow for UH's lone senior Tanja Nikolic.
