HONOLULU -- The No. 13 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (11-4, 4-0) defeated the Texas-El Paso Miners (5-8, 1-3) 30-23, 23-30, 30-22 and 30-21 in front of 6,488 at the Stan Sheriff Center Friday night.
Kim Willoughby broke her own school record for kills in a four-game match with 36, while she also had 11 digs, three blocks and hit .365. Willoughby's old record of 35 kills in four-games was set less than a month ago on Sept. 21 in a match against Santa Clara.
Lauren Duggins had another great performance with 18 digs, seven kills, seven blocks and a .357 hitting percentage while Margaret Vakasausau had 56 assists and 15 digs.
Hawai`i cruised through the first game 30-23 then hit a snag at the beginning of the second game. They trailed 11-5 before coming back to tie the game at 16. The Wahine kept the deficit at 22-21 before the Miners rode a 8-2 run to end the game 30-23. Game 2 marked the first time that UTEP was able to take a game off the Wahine.
Hawai`i then came out and beat the Miners pretty easily in game 3 as Kim Willoughby had an amazing 13 kills to lead the Wahine to the 30-22 win. UH then came back from an 8-4 deficit to end the match with a 30-21 game 4 win.
Hawai`i will next face SMU in a 4 p.m. match on Sunday, Oct. 14. The Wahine will then head to the road to play San Diego State, San Jose State and Fresno State the following week.
