HONOLULU – Art Gladstone, CEO of Straub Medical Center and Pali Momi Medical Center, is the 2018 recipient of the Charlie Ushijima Award, presented to an outstanding volunteer for dedicated and unselfish service to the University of Hawai'i Athletics Department.
Gladstone will receive the award during halftime of the UH men's basketball game, Saturday, March 2.
Gladstone is an ardent basketball fan and the current president of the UH Men's Basketball Booster Club. He has worked with the club's membership to increase the fundraising ability of the club as well as enhance membership numbers and the camaraderie amongst the club members.
He is also on the Board of Directors for UH's 'Ahahui Koa Ānuenue as well as other organizations. Gladstone assumed various roles at Straub before being promoted to chief executive officer in 2013. He assumed the additional role of CEO at Pali Momi in 2015.
The Ushijima Award was last presented in 2013. It was originally entitled the Rainbow Service Award but later re-named after its first recipient, the late Charlie Ushijima who was responsible for the building of the first on-campus baseball stadium. In addition he fulfilled countless hours of volunteer work as President of the UH booster club for baseball.
