Derek Inouchi joined the University of Hawai‘i Athletics Department in January 1997.
He currently holds the position of Director of Media Relations since 2007 after spending 10 years as assistant media relations director. Inouchi oversees a five-member staff and heads the communication efforts of the Athletics Department and its 21 intercollegiate sports teams.
At UH, Inouchi has promoted All-America student-athletes; covered numerous bowl teams, including the 2007 squad which appeared in the Allstate Sugar Bowl; and countless nationally ranked teams and championship squads, including the 2021-22 back-to-back national champion men’s volleyball teams.
In addition, Inouchi has served as the media coordinator for the Hawai‘i Bowl since 2007. He was also the media coordinator for both the 1998 NCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship and 1999 NCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship.
The Honolulu native is a longtime member of the College Sports Communicators (CSC) and Football Writers Association of America. He also chairs UH’s Sports Circle of Honor Selection Committee.
Inouchi earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from UH in 1996. He and his wife Michele have two children and reside in Honolulu.
