Former Warrior Sean Carney begins his first season with his alma mater as assistant coach.
Carney spent the past several years coaching club volleyball and serving as an instructor at IMPACT Volleyball Club (Honolulu) and Elite Sports Academy (Honolulu), the latter of which he founded in 2012. Also that year, he co-founded the Hawai‘i Elite Volleyball Club with several other former Warrior and Rainbow Wahine volleyball players.
He’s assisted with both the ‘Iolani and Punahou high school varsity teams as well as coached numerous camps, including the UH men’s volleyball camp from 2005-09.
The Honolulu, O’ahu native lettered for UH from 2006-09, where he finished his career with 1,747 assists, 458 digs, 167 blocks, and 52 service aces. He played the majority of his career at setter until his senior season in which he played both opposite and setter. Carney served as team captain during his junior and senior seasons. He was an all-tournament team pick at the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Invitational in 2008 and was named the Honolulu Quarterback Club Athlete of the Month for April 2009.
Following his collegiate career, he played professionally in Europe for Nesselande Volleyball Club in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 2009 followed by a one-year stint with Finland’s Sun Volley during the 2010-11 season, where he became the first international player to serve as captain in the club’s history.
A 2004 graduate of ‘Iolani School, Carney was a four-year varsity letterman who earned Honolulu Advertiser state player of the year and Interscholastic League of Honolulu co-player of the year honors as a senior in 2004. That year, he led the Raiders to both the state and ILH titles. He was a two-time second-team all-state selection and two-time recipient of the school’s Eddie Hamada Award. Carney was also a member of the ‘Iolani boys varsity basketball team which captured the state and league titles in 2003 and ’04.
Carney holds a bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurial studies at UH in 2011. He served as a commentator on the OC Sports broadcast of UH men’s volleyball last season.
