Scott Fisher begins his first season as assistant coach at UH after serving as the team’s director of operations during the 2010-11 season.
Fisher helped lead UH to 19 wins and an appearance in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. His duties last season included coordinating team travel, film breakdown and exchange; recruiting, academics and camp; and supervising the team managers. As an assistant this year he will be involved in recruiting, scouting, monitoring the team’s academic progress and working with the team’s post players.
Fisher came to Hawai‘i after spending two decades as a player and head coach in Australia’s National Basketball League. The 48-year-old enjoyed a Hall of Fame career in the NBL, winning a pair of league MVP honors as well as three league titles. The perennial all-star started his career in 1987 with the North Melbourne Giants. Fisher was awarded the NBL’s MVP and the Grand Final MVP, and helped his team to the NBL championship in 1989. Fisher went on to play for the Perth Wildcats four years later and would go on to participate in another two NBL championships in 1995 and 2000.
As a member of the Australian National Team for four years, Fisher participated in numerous international events, including the 1996 Olympics in which the Australians finished in fourth place. Two years later he represented Australia in the 1998 World Championships and was a silver medalist at the Goodwill Games.
Fisher was named in the NBL’s 20th Anniversary Team in 1998 and the 25th Anniversary Team in 2003 shortly after retiring. In 2007 Fisher was inducted into the NBL Hall of Fame. Following his playing career, Fisher served as head coach for Perth, leading the Wildcats to the NBL Finals all four seasons (2004-08) he was coaching.
A native of Fremont, Calif., Fisher played collegiate basketball at UC Santa Barbara (1982-86). Originally joining the team as a walk-on, he left the school ranked in the top five in career points (1,351) and rebounds (664). A two-time all-conference selection and the record holder for points in a game (39), Fisher is a member of the UC Santa Barbara Athletic Hall of Fame.
