SERIES INFORMATION
- Hawai‘i and Cal met for the fifth time and first time on a neutral site. Cal improved to 3-2 in the series after the 51-31 win.
- With the loss, Hawai‘i dropped to 2-2 all-time in neutral site games.
- This was the seventh consecutive year UH has opened the season versus a Pac-12 squad. UH moved to 2-5 in that stretch and 4-8 all-time in openers versus the Pac-12.
- Since 2004, UH has had 34 meetings with Power 5 conference teams. UH moved to 10-24 with today’s result.
STREAKS
- Nick Rolovich is the fifth straight UH head coach to drop his debut. Prior to Rolvovich were Norm Chow (2012, USC 49-10), Greg McMackin (2008, at Florida 56-10), June Jones (1999, USC 62-7) and Fred vonAppen (1996, Boston College 24-21). Bob Wagner was the last head coach to win his first game (1987, Cal State Fullerton 44-0).
- UH has dropped 25 of its last 26 games away from Aloha Stadium.
- UH has lost 25 of its last 26 games on national television with its only win during that stretch against Colorado on CBS Sports Network to open the 2015 season.
- Paul Harris ended the 2015 season with four straight 100-yard rushing games. That streak of 100-yard games came to an end after he finished with 36 yards on seven carries.
- Long-snapper Brodie Nakama made his 39th straight start as a Rainbow Warrior, the longest streak on the team.
- Dejon Allen made his 25th straight start, the longest on the offensive side of the ball. It was his first career start at left tackle.
TEAM NOTES
- UH’s 31 points was its highest output in its last 14 meetings versus FBS squad (37-35 win over UNLV on Nov. 22, 2014).
- The Rainbow Warriors 482 yards of total offense were also the most since that UNLV game.
- Three different running backs scored a touchdown for UH: Diocemy Saint Juste, Steven Lakalaka and Paul Harris.
- The 51 points surrendered by UH were the most in an opener since a 56-10 loss at Florida in 2008.
- Cal’s 630 yards of total offense was the highest output by a UH opponent since Wyoming racked up a school-record 793 yards in 2013.
- The 441 passing yards by Cal’s Davis Webb were the most by an opposing quarterback since Wyoming’s Brett Smith (498) in 2013.
- The 14 receptions by Cal’s Chad Hansen is tied for the third-most ever by a UH opponent and the most since 2004 (15 - Anthony Crissinger-Hill, Florida Atlantic).
- UH debuted its new all-white Under Armour road uniforms, including a white helmet that was first used in UH’s 2015 home season-finale versus UL Monroe.
- UH had six first-time starters: 2 on offense and 4 on defense.
INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
- Diocemy Saint Juste, who redshirted the 2015 season, started the game and saw his first game action since 2014.
- Saint Juste finished with 118 yards on 14 carries for his second career 100-yard game.
- His 53-yard touchdown dash in the first quarter was the longest run of his career.
- This marked the second time that Ikaika Woolsey was the opening-day starter at quarterback. He finished 17-of-34 for 234 yards (1 TD, 1 INT). In 2014 he went 23-of-42 for 207 yards (0 TD, 0 INT) in a 17-16 home loss to Washington.
- Redshirt freshman John Ursua’s first career catch went for a 32-yard gain. Ursua finished with a team-high five catches (70 yards).
- Marcus Kemp scored the first UH touchdown of the season with a 39-yard connection from Ikaika Woolsey midway through the first quarter. It was the sixth career touchdown for the senior receiver. Kemp recorded a team-high 73 yards receiving
- Jahlani Tavai and Trayvon Henderson led UH with 12 tackles as both players set new career highs in the category.
- Samiuela Akoteo recorded his first career sack with a takedown of Davis Webb in the first quarter.
- While making seven previous start on the offensive line, senior Leo Koloamatangi made his first career start at center
- Steven Lakalaka scored his first touchdown since the 2014 season when he scored on a 4-yard plunge in the third quarter. Lakalaka finished with 11 carries for 61 yards.
- Paul Harris scored his seventh career touchdown with a 4th-quarter score.
- As he did last year, Rigo Sanchez again handled all kicking duties (kickoff, field goal, PAT, punt) for UH. Sanchez attempted an onside kick to start the game, which was recovered by Cal and converted on a 42-yard field goal in the third quarter.
