HONOLULU – The Hawai'i baseball team dropped the series finale of its Big West opening series vs. Cal Poly, 7-3, Sunday at Les Murakami Stadium. The Mustangs handed the 'Bows a three-game series sweep to begin conference play.
It marks the first time since 2024 that the Rainbow Warriors were swept at home, and the first time since 2021 in San Luis Obispo that UH was swept by Cal Poly.
The Mustangs scored an unearned run in the first to take an early lead, but
Jake Redding provided the answer for the 'Bows in the second. After a pair of hit batters and a walk, the catcher came up with the bases loaded and two outs and knocked a three-run double off the wall in the right field to make it 3-1.
Cal Poly responded with a single run in the third and three more in the fourth to go in front. Cam Hoiland vaulted the Mustangs ahead with a two-run single before Ryan Tayman added to the lead with a run-scoring double, making it 5-3.
A Nate Castellon RBI single in the eighth and a Casey Murray Jr. solo shot in the ninth gave the Mustangs additional insurance and put the game out of reach.
Redding – the UH nine-hole hitter – paced the offense going 2-for-4 with his three-run double to give him eight RBIs on the season. The sophomore has a pair of multi-RBI games on the season and is tied for the team-lead with four doubles.
The Rainbow Warriors close out their season-opening homestand with a game against Chaminade on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m.
