HONOLULU – The Hawai'i baseball team dropped game one of its Big West opening series against Cal Poly, 6-2, Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
Mustang starter Griffin Naess kept the Rainbow Warrior bats in check for most of the night, allowing just two runs on three hits over 6.1 innings with five strikeouts to earn the win. Naess then gave way to the bullpen which combined to shut out the 'Bows over the final 2.2 frames.
The Mustangs scored single runs in the second and third innings to take an early 2-0 lead, but UH answered with a pair of runs in the fourth to tie it up.
Draven Nushida delivered a one-out RBI single to put the 'Bows on the board before
Kamana Nahaku singled with two outs to knot it up.
Alejandro Garza put Cal Poly right back in front a half inning later on a two-run homer down the left field line that was initially ruled foul before being overturned following a discussion.
Grant Garman gave the Rainbow Warriors 2.1 innings out of the bullpen in relief of
Isaiah Magdaleno, striking out four and allowing no earned runs. UH pitching combined for nine strikeouts, marking the ninth time this year that the 'Bows have struck out nine or more batters.
The two teams continue their series Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium. Tickets for Saturday's game are sold out, however fans can purchase resale tickets online via
SeatGeek. Standing room tickets will be available at the door and UH Mānoa students can get in for free with a valid student ID.
