Men’s Volleyball Falls To Pepperdine; Win Streaks Snapped

HONOLULU – The third-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team saw its 11-match win streak come to an end after a four-set loss to seventh-ranked Pepperdine, Wednesday in the first of two non-conference matches at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 28-26, 25-22, 15-25, 30-28.

The Rainbow Warriors (14-2) also saw their 13-match home win streak over the Waves come to an end. Hawai'i hadn't lost to Pepperdine at Bankoh Arena since 2009.

The teams will play again on Friday at 7:00 p.m.

Kainoa Wade led Hawai'i with 19 kills, hitting .350, along with nine digs, and three blocks. The sophomore overcame a slow start and recorded 14 kills with only one attack error over most of the final three sets. Louis Sakanoko added 15 kills, hitting .344 with seven digs and two blocks. Adrien Roure tallied 10 kills, three aces, three digs, and four blocks.

Setter Tread Rosenthal recorded 42 assists and directed an offense that hit .328, including a combined .491 in Sets 3 and 4. The junior added 13 digs and four blocks and served his 100th career ace in the third set. Middle blockers Justin Todd and Trevell Jordan each had four kills and five blocks.

The Waves (11-3) were led by Cole Hartke, who tallied a match-high 24 kills with 12 of the team's 16 kills coming in the fourth set. Ryan Barnett added 13 kills.

Pepperdine squeaked out the opening set on its fourth serve for the game after blocking Sakanoko. The Waves then rallied from an early hole in Set 2 and hung on to take a two sets to none lead in the match.

The Warriors wouldn't quit in the third, jumping out to a 9-3 advantage. The lead was 15-8 at the media timeout and UH was never threatened. Wade finished with seven kills in 11 errorless attempts in the frame

The teams traded blows in the fourth set. The Waves grabbed a 20-17 lead after a 4-1 run and had match point at 24-22 before the Warriors erased both with a kill by Rosenthal and timely ace by Todd. UH then had set point twice while fending off another match point until an ace by Barnett made it 29-28. Gomez finished off the match with his 11th kill.
