Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Over North Dakota, Pacific

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (3-0) swept their Friday doubleheader on Day 2 of the Bank of Hawai'i Paradise Classic. The Rainbow Wahine first defeated North Dakota, 4-2, then rallied to knock off Pacific, 6-2. Senior transfer pitcher Hannah Pitts earned the complete-game victory over the Fighting Hawks, while senior reliever Millie Fidge came in to toss the final five innings to win her first game of the season.

Hawai'i starting pitcher Pitts (1-0) earned her first complete game win as a Rainbow Wahine allowing two runs on three hits with zero walks and five strikeouts. She faced just 24 batters and induced 13 flyouts in her first UH appearance.
 
The Fighting Hawks got on the board first on a sacrifice fly hit by Katelyn Neumeyer to score Brooklyn Morris for a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.
 
Hawai'i, however then erupted for four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jamie McGaughey led off the frame with a walk and Maycen Gibbs followed with a single up the middle. Another walk issued to Milan Ah Yat loaded the bases for Ellyanna Cinzori who drilled a single through the right-side of the infield scoring both pinch-runner Kennedy Thompson and Gibbs to leapfrog ahead of UND. Abby Sasaki followed by lacing an RBI single to the left-center gap to score Ah Ya. Pinch-hitter Kolbi Kochi then came through with an RBI single that drove home Cinzori to give UH a 4-1 lead.
 
The Fighting Hawks got one run back in the seventh with a solo home run by Camryn Lasota.
 
UND's Unity Nelson (0-1) suffered the loss in a complete game effort. She allowed four runs on five hits with five walks and two strikeouts.
 
 
Hawai'I 6, Pacific 2
The Tigers posted a run to start the game on an Ave Risati RBI single that scored Olivia Silvestre from second.
 
The 'Bows see-saw into the lead as Gibbs launched a two-run bomb over the centerfield fence that drove in Murakami, who had led off the inning with a single up the middle.
 
But Pacific knotted the score at 2-2 in the following frame on a Peyton Cliff RBI single.
 
The Rainbow Wahine broke the tie and the game open in the fifth. UH rallying for four runs to go ahead for good. Speedy pinch-hitter Rhea Furtado led off the inning by reaching on a throwing error that allowed her to hustle into second safely. Murakami advanced Furtado to third on a sacrifice bunt, For the second straight game, Kochi came through in the clutch as a pinch-hitter, lifting a sacrifice fly to break the tie as Furtado crossed the plate. After Gibbs added a single, Jamie McGaughey blasted her first home run of the season over the right-centerfield fence. Later with runners at the corners, Ah Yat scored on a wild pitch to give UH a 6-2 lead.
 
The Tigers threatened to score in the sixth, as they loaded the bases with one out. But Fidge was able to get a popout to herself and then snuffed out their rally with a swinging strikeout.
 
Hawai'i Macy Brandl got the start and tossed the first two-plus innings. She allowed two runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout. Relieve Millie Fidge threw the final five shut out innings. She scattered two hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
 
Pacific's Kaytee Dahlstrom (0-1) suffered the loss, throwing six total innings. She allowed five runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. Reliever Ariel Nava came in the game to try to squelch the UH rally in the fifth but was unable to record an out which force the Tigers to re-enter Dahlstrom in the same inning.
 
Hawai'i wil wrap up the Bank of Hawai'i Paradise Cassic on Saturday, Feb. 7. UH wil take on Pacific at 12:30 p.m. HT followed by the series finale vs. SeattleU at 3:00 p.m. HT.
