HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (4-4, 2-0 Big West) responded in strong fashion Saturday afternoon, defeating Long Beach State, 5-2, at the UH Tennis Complex. After dropping the doubles point, the Rainbow Wahine regrouped and powered through singles play, stringing together five straight victories to secure the win over the Beach.
In doubles play, UH leveled the contest at one match apiece when Grete Gull and Sophie Rachor delivered a 6–3 win over LBSU's Cecilia Costa and Paulina Franco Martinessi. The doubles point eventually came down to Court No. 3, where Hawai'i's Makeilah Nepomuceno and Hannah Galindo mounted a comeback from 3-0 deficit to even the score at 5-5. Despite their fight, the duo narrowly fell, 7-5, as Long Beach State clinched the doubles point.
The Rainbow Wahine dominated singles play, winning five of the six matches to power past the Beach. Allaire Berl put UH on the board first with a dominant straight sets win, 6-1, 6-0, against LBSU's Daisy Carpenter. Emma Forgac followed Berl, earning a 6-1, 7-5 straight sets victory over the Beach's Thea Jagare. Gull battled to a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win to extend UH's lead 3-1. Galindo secured the win with a gritty 7-5, 7-5 decision over LBSU's Pamela Badillo. Nepomuceno added another point after the match was already decided, defeating Diana De Simone, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
The Rainbow Wahine continue their homestand next weekend, hosting Bucknell at the UH Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. HT.
