Women’s Basketball Blows Past UC Davis, 67-46

HONOLULU — A blazing shooting performance to start the fourth quarter helped the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team extend its hot streak with a 67-46 win over UC Davis on Thursday at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine (17-10, 11-6 Big West) built a nine-point lead through three quarters then hit their first eight shots of the fourth quarter — including four 3-pointers — to break away from the visiting Aggies (21-7, 14-3) on their way to their fifth straight win and 11th in the last 12 games.

UH saw a double-digit lead disappear in the fourth quarter in a loss to the Aggies to open the Big West season back on Dec. 4 in Davis, Calif. This time the 'Bows left no doubt in outscoring UC Davis (21-8, 14-4) 25-13 in the final 10 minutes to claim the rematch and earn a split of the regular-season series.

With the win, UH moved a game behind Cal State Fullerton for fourth place in the Big West standings heading into a meeting with the Titans in Saturday's home finale.

Bailey Flavell led UH with 16 points and eight rebounds while Keiara Curtis and Saniyah Neverson each poured in 15. Neverson went a perfect 3-of-3 on three-pointers, tying her career high from behind the arc, as UH went 10-of-22 on the evening in its third double-figure performance of the season. UH also employed its signature defense in avenging its tight road loss to the Aggies as UC Davis shot just 36% from the floor, including 6-of-26 from three-point territory.
UH led 11-9 after a physical first quarter and went on a 10-0 run in the second sparked by 3-pointers from Curtis and Izzy Forsyth to open up a 26-13 margin. UC Davis made a five-point push late in the period but a layup by Neverson off a feed from Rebecca Moors sent UH into halftime with a 30-20 lead. The UH defense limited the Aggies to 31% shooting from the field in the first 20 minutes.

The Aggies cut the deficit to just 37-33 at the 2:56 mark of the third quarter. But that's when the Rainbow Wahine went into overdrive. The 'Bows went on a 16-2 run bridging the third and fourth quarter  – including 11 unanswered points – to extend its lead to 53-35. It was a run capped by Neverson's transition three-pointer off a Flavell steal as UH would take an 18-point lead into the final eight minutes. That lead would balloon to as many as 24 points later in the fourth quarter, powered by the 'Bows torrid shooting.
The Rainbow Wahine close out the home schedule by taking on Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Feb. 28. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. UH will celebrate Senior Night following the home finale and will honor Forsyth, Neverson and Imani Perez the traditional postgame ceremony.
