Softball Splits Doubleheader at CBU Classic

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i softball team (5-3) split its Sunday doubleheader at the CBU Classic at Cal Baptist's John C. Funk Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine outlasted Utah State in a six-inning slugfest, 16-8, in their first game, but fell to LMU, 6-0, in its second game.

Hawai'i 16, Utah State 8 (6 innings)
Hawai'i was leading 13-4 going into the fifth and had a chance to close it out in five innings, but with two outs the Aggies rallied to score four runs to extend the game. But the 'Bows rallied for three runs in the sixth to end the game. Nine different Rainbow Wahine notched at least one hit with six earning two hits — including the top four batters in the lineup. Ten different players scored at least one run in the offensive onslaught.

UH's Macy Brandl earned her first win of the year throwing a total of 4-1/3 innings. She allowed seven runs on seven hits with three walks and a strikeout. Millie Fidge was able to get one out in the fifth, but allowed one run. Taryn Irimata shut down the Aggies for the remainder of the game, tossing the final 1-1/3 innings. She gave up two hits with a strikeout to squelch the Aggies' rallies.

The Aggies struck first, scoring one run in the top of the second on an RBI double by Grace Matej.

Hawai'i however batted around the order and rallied for nine runs on two outs in the bottom of the second. Some of the highlights of the inning were Kayara-Leigh Tuiloma's 2-RBI single that drove in Jamie McGaughey and Maycen Gibbs. Carys Murakami's double to score both Kolbi Kochi and Tuiloma. Later Gibbs cranked her second home run of the season to score Milan Ah Yat and Teiah Keliiholokai driving in McGaughey with an RBI single which capped UH's scoring at nine in the frame.

The Aggies and Rainbow Wahine traded runs through the fourth. Then in the fifth, with UH leading 13-4, Utah State rallied with two out for four runs to cut UH's lead to 13-8 to extend the game. In the inning, UH's Brandl was lifted for reliever Fidge who was able to get an out, but hit two batters and Brandl re-entered the circle. But a walk and a wild pitch ended her outing and Irimata entered the game and snuffed out the fire for the final inning and a third.

In the sixth, UH scored three runs to put the game away. Rhea Furtado and Ah Yat had RBI singles to drive in Nevaeh Telles and Murakami respectively. UH ended the game on a first and third double steal with Ah Yat drawing the throw to second and Furtado crossing the plate for the game ending run.

Utah State went through six pitchers in the game. Taking the loss was Emmalyn Brinka (3-2) who threw the first 1-2/3 innings. She allowed eight runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

LMU 6, Hawai'i 0
After the offensive barrage against Utah State, Hawai'i was shut out for the first time this season by Loyola Marymount. After finishing the first game in the circle, UH's Irimata threw the first four innings against the Lions. Irimata (2-2) took the loss, allowing all six runs on nine hits with a walk and a strike out. Reliever Hannah Pitts shut down LMU for the final two innings. Pitts did not allow a hit or a run with one strikeout.

LMU allowed just one runner to reach second base through seven innings and relief pitcher Lindsay O'Dell retired the final 10 straight batters to end the game. O'Dell (6-0) earned the win throwing 3-2/3 innings. She gave up just one hit with four strikeouts. Starter Angela Carrera threw the first 3-1/3 innings and gave up two hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

The Lions, who improved to 10-1 on the season, scored two runs in the first, second and fourth innings

The Rainbow Wahine tried their best to get something going, and went 16 deep on their roster, but UH was unable to gain any traction. Murakami led the offense going 2-for-3 at the plate, and earned two of UH's total of three hits for the game.

UH concludes the CBU Classic taking on the host team, Cal Baptist on Tuesday afternoon at 11:30 a.m. HT at the John C. Funk Stadium. Originally, the game was scheduled for Monday, Feb. 16, but due to incoming inclement weather, the game was moved to Tuesday afternoon.
