Men’s Tennis Battles, Falls to Grand Canyon

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (4-4, 1-0 Big West) fought hard but ultimately dropped a 4-2 decision to Grand Canyon on Sunday afternoon at the GCU Tennis Courts. The Rainbow Warriors came out sharp, securing the doubles point to take early control of the match. However the Antelopes surged in singles play, claiming four matches to pull away for the win..

The 'Bows opened the match by capturing the doubles point. After dropping the decision on Court No. 3, UH responded with back-to-back victories to take a 1-0 lead. On Court No. 2, the duo of Azuma Visaya and Toa Maeda sparked UH with a commanding 6-2 win over GCU's Tristan Berard and Andreas Loizas. UH's No. 1 pair of Timothy Li and Kosuke Nakanishi then sealed the point in dramatic fashion, defeating the 'Lopes' pair of Daniel Jankoski and Brice Patoux in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5).

GCU responded with a strong push in singles, capturing four courts to clinch the victory. Diordan Macababbad set the tone with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Kent Mueller and Patoux followed with a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Adriano Dzhenev. Hawai'i evened the match at 2–2 behind a steady performance from Li, who defeated Loizas, 6–2, 6–3, for UH's lone singles point. The 'Lopes quickly regained momentum on Court No. 6, where Charlie Pade outlasted Maeda in three sets, 6–4, 3–6, 6–3. The decisive point came on Court No. 1, as GCU's Berard edged Visaya in a tightly contested three-set battle, 7–5, 2–6, 7–5, to clinch the match.

The Rainbow Warriors finished their first road trip of the season with a 2–1 mark. Hawai'i returns home for a brief break before traveling to California on March 4 to face Pacific in Stockton, Calif. before heading to compete in the Golden State Invitational.
