Swim & Dive Big West Championships Underway; Ramirez Tamayo Claims Second 1M Title

HOUSTON — The University of Hawai'i men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the Big West Championships with three event victories on Wednesday at the CRWC Natatorium in Houston, Texas.

The Rainbow Warriors sit atop the team standings with 126 points after capturing titles in the 200 medley relay, the 800 free relay, and the 1-meter springboard. On the women's side, the Rainbow Wahine totaled 34 points after the opening day of competition.

The Rainbow Warriors' 800 free relay "A Team" of Adam Zdybel, Regan Richardson, Victor Dagenais, and Tom Thalau clinched the gold, touching the wall at 6:23.63. In the relay, Thalau set a new Hawai'i record with an anchor leg split of 1:33.25. The men's 200 medley relay squad of Karol Ostrowski, Tom Caps, Jack Simon, and Finn Brophy also claimed gold with a time of 1:24.48.
 
The Rainbow Wahine 800 free relay group of Brooke Bennett, Gabriela Kelly, Mia Blazhevska Eminova, and Rebekka Luoto finished second with a mark of 7:17.20.

In diving, sophomore Juan Esteban Ramirez Tamayo captured the 1-meter title for a second consecutive season. Ramirez Tamayo broke his own Big West Championship record he set a year ago, posting a score of 360.70. It is also the eighth-highest mark in Hawai'i history. Oliver Wignall finished close behind in third place with a score of 294.55.
 
The Rainbow Wahine also claimed a victory in the women's team diving exhibition event. Lovisa Gustavsson, Ruby Pickron, and Macie Wheeler combined for a winning score of 306.90


UH continues the competition on Thursday with Day Two of the Big West Championships. Prelims are scheduled for 6:00 a.m. HT (10:00 a.m. CT), followed by finals competition at 2:00 p.m. HT (6:00 p.m. CT) at the CRWC Natatorium.
