Women’s Basketball Turned Back By UC San Diego

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team battled uphill in the second half but couldn't get over the summit in a 65-54 loss to UC San Diego on Saturday at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine (6-8, 0-4 Big West) saw a six-point halftime deficit reach 13 in the third quarter and the Tritons (8-5, 3-0) held off UH's efforts at a comeback in the fourth period.

Keiara Curtis led UH in scoring for the second straight game with 13 points, while fellow freshman Bailey Flavell added 12 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Saniyah Neverson scored 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting

Forward Imani Perez became the eighth player in program history to reach 100 career blocks when she deflected a 3-point attempt in the second quarter. The senior finished with nine points and had five of the team's 10 blocks.

UH went with a new-look lineup with Curtis and Jade Peacock making their first starts of the season and Perez rejoining the group after coming off the bench in the previous four games.

Perez hit an early 3-pointer and UH shot 54% from the field in the first quarter to take a 16-13 lead. The 'Bows led 23-18 before the Tritons surged ahead with a 15-3 run in the second quarter and opened up a 33-26 margin when Sabrina Ma drained her second 3-pointer of the run. Kyra Webb ended the run with a putback but Ma made two free throws with 4 seconds left in the half and UCSD took a 35-29 lead into the break.

UH committed 11 turnovers in the first half leading to the Tritons taking a 12-6 advantage in points off of turnovers.

UCSD went on an 8-0 run to open up a double-digit lead in the third quarter and led 46-33 at the 3:39 mark of the third quarter. Curtis hit her second 3-pointer to end the run and spark an 8-0 UH run. The 'Bows closed to 46-41 when Flavell drained a 3-pointer, but Ma answered from the corner to send UCSD into the fourth with a 49-41 lead.

UCSD scored first in the fourth quarter but UH battled back with a six-point run and cut the deficit to 51-47 with 6:21 left. However, Rosa Smith drained a three-pointer on the next possession and the 'Bows would get no closer again. Smith finished with 14 points and drained four of the Triton's nine three-pointers. She was one of four UCSD players in double-digit scoring, led by Erin Condron's 16 points.

After winning 19 of its previous 20 Big West home games, the 'Bows have now dropped back-to-back league contests at the Bankoh Arena. UH continued to struggle with turnovers, finishing with 24 for the game.

The Rainbow Wahine will have a single-game road trip up next. They'll play at UC Irvine on Saturday, Jan. 10 at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif.
