Women’s Basketball Picks Up Emphatic Win Over UC Santa Barbara

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team closed out a homestand sweep with a commanding 67-50 win over UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

UH senior Saniyah Neverson sparked the Rainbow Wahine (8-9, 2-5 Big West) in the first half and freshman Keiara Curtis took over in the second to help UH hand the Gauchos (13-3, 5-2) just their third loss of the season.

Curtis set a season high with 19 points, 14 coming in the second half. Curtis went 8-for-13 from the field with three 3-pointers and also set a season best with eight rebounds. She also dished out four assists, matching her season high, and came up with three steals.

Neverson hit a career-high three 3-pointers in a 13-point first half performance and finished with 15 points and five rebounds.

The UH defense came up with eight blocked shots, led by senior Imani Perez's three, and held UCSB to 34.5% shooting from the field, including a 28.6% showing from 3-point range.
UCSB entered the game seventh in the nation in 3-point percentage at 38%, but missed its first eight shots beyond the arc on Saturday. UH meanwhile went 4-for-6 from long range in the first quarter with Kyra Webb hitting two against a Gauchos defense ranked first nationally in 3-point percentage defense.

The 'Bows took a 16-10 lead after the first quarter. UH opened the second period with a 10-1 run capped by a putback by Perez. UCSB finally connected on its first two 3-pointers and closed to within eight, but Neverson scored UH's final eight points of the half and her third 3-pointer sent the 'Bows into halftime with a 37-23 lead.

UH maintained a double-digit lead through the third quarter with Curtis contributing seven points in the period. She hit a 3-pointer to extend UH's lead to 16 late in the third and drained another early in the fourth to push the lead to 59-40.
The 'Bows maintained control in the fourth quarter with UCSB getting no closer than 14 and Curtis adding seven more points to her total. UH finished the game shooting 49% – it's second-best mark this season – including a sizzling 8-of-19 from three-point territory.

The Rainbow Wahine head back to California for a two-game road trip starting Jan. 22 at CSU Bakersfield. They'll then play at CSUN on Jan. 24.
