Women's Volleyball Faces Portland to Close Homestand

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team wraps up its season-opening homestand by taking on Portland in a two-match series set for Sept. 11 and 12 at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
 
The Rainbow Wahine enter the week coming off back-to-back sweeps to capture the OUTRIGGER Invitational title. Portland also celebrated a successful home tournament after going 2-0 in the Portland Invitational.

OPENING SERVE
  • The Rainbow Wahine went 2-1 in the OUTRIGGER Invitational, closing the weekend with sweeps of Utah Valley and St. John's.
  • UH claimed three Big West weekly awards on Monday. Cha'lei Reid was voted the conference's Offensive Player of the Week, middle blocker Bri Gunderson earned the Defensive Player of the Week award and Adrianna Arquette picked up the Setter of the Week honor.
  • Reid was named the OUTRIGGER Invitational's Most Outstanding Player after posting 50 kills (4.55 per set) and 10 aces in the tournament. She leads the Big West and ranks 17th in the nation in total aces with 15. She's also fifth in the conference with 3.59 kills per set.
  • Gunderson was named to the All-Tournament team after posting 18 blocks in the tournament. She leads the Big West with 30 total blocks and 1.43 blocks per set.
  • Arquette dished out 113 assists last week and moved up to second in the conference with 9.36 assists per set.
  • Stella Adeyemi averaged 3.45 kills per set last week and was also named to the All-Tournament team.
  • UH threatened a program record with 16 aces against St. John's and jumped to first in the Big West and 15th in the nation with 51 this season.
  • UH is 498-79 all-time in Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center since the facility opened in 1994.

THE MATCHUP
  • Hawai'i and Portland meet for just the second time and for the first time since 2018.
  • Portland won the previous meeting in five sets, 19-25, 25-11, 25-18, 20-25, 15-8, on Sept. 7, 2018 in the Outrigger Volleyball Challenge at the Stan Sheriff Center.
  • Portland enters the week at 5-1 coming off two wins in the Portland Invitational last week.
  • The Pilots have swept four opponents and their lone loss came against Oregon on Sept. 3.
  • Portland has faced two Big West teams in Cal State Fullerton (won 3-0) and CSUN (won 3-2).
  • Portland's roster includes four players from Hawai'i in Maui Robins (Kalihi), Sydney Cazimero (Mililani), Callie Pieper (Kāne'ohe) and Taina Kaauwai (Hilo).
  • Robins is Portland's points leader with 79 (3.95 per set).
  • Elin Larsson leads the Pilots with 3.45 kills per set followed by Robins at 3.35 kps.  
  • The Pilots rank first in the WCC and 16th in the nation in aces per set (2.25).
  • UH sophomore Adrianna Arquette played high school volleyball with Robins and Cazimero at Kamehameha Schools-Kapālama.
  • Portland head coach Megan Burton also a Hawai'i product and graduated from 'Iolani School. Burton is in her sixth year and has a record of 43-89.
  • Associate Head Coach Dylan Hamilton is originally from 'Ulupalakua, Maui and was a standout at Seabury Hall.
