Alejado, Matsuzawa Honored After Standout Performances

HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i quarterback Micah Alejado and placekicker Kansei Matsuzawa picked up several awards for their performances in the Rainbow Warriors' 44-35 road win over Air Force last Saturday.
 
Alejado, a redshirt freshman from Las Vegas, Nev., earned both the Old Trapper Mountain West Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week awards for the second time this season, in addition to being selected to the Davey O'Brien Award Great 8 and Manning Award Stars of the Week. Matsuzawa, a senior from Tokyo, Japan, was named the Old Trapper Mountain West's Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time this season.
 
By being selected to the Great 8, Alejado is now on the official Davey O'Brien Award Midseason Watch List.
 
Both Alejado and Matsuzawa helped UH score the most points (44) in the Timmy Chang era and most since 2021 (50 vs. Colorado State). It was also the most points scored in a road game since 2019 (45 at New Mexico).
 
UH is 4-2 and 1-1 in MW heading into the first of three bye weeks on the year.
 
Micah Alejado
  • Posted his second career 400-yard passing game with 457 yards on 35-of-47 passing and three touchdowns
  • Became the first UH quarterback to throw for 450+ yards twice in his first five career starts (Colt Brennan had two 450+ games in his first six starts)
  • His 463 yards of total offense (457 passing, 6 rushing) is the third-most by an FBS player this season and second-highest among Mountain West players
  • Directed the offense which registered a season-high 535 yards of total offense
  • Two of his TD passes went to Jackson Harris, including a 74-yarder in the fourth quarter that put UH ahead 41-28
 
Kansei Matsuzawa
  • Tied his career-high with three field goals (31, 39, 25)
  • Perfect 16-for-16 on the year
  • Sits alone with a new UH record of 16 straight field goals made to the start the season, surpassing Rigoberto Sanchez (13 in 2016)
  • Also set a new Mountain West record for consecutive field goals made to start a season surpassing the previous mark of 15 by UNLV's Daniel Gutierrez (2022) and Wyoming's Cooper Rothe (2018)
  • Dating back to last season, has made 17 straight field goals, the second longest streak in school history (Jason Elam holds the record with 20 straight made during the 1989 season)
  • Leads FBS with 16 field goals made, 2.67 field goals made per game, and 62 points
