HONOLULU — A series sweep led to two Big West weekly awards for the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team.
After the Rainbow Wahine earned two victories against Portland last week, sophomore libero
Victoria Leyva was named the Big West Defensive Player of the Week and outside hitter
Cha'lei Reid received the Freshman of the Week award on Monday. The conference honor is the first for Leyva and Reid received recognition from the Big West for the second straight week.
Leyva anchored Hawai'i's floor defense with 40 digs and averaged 4.44 per set to help the Rainbow Wahine fend off Portland in last week's series. She posted a match-high 17 digs in the opener then tied her season and career highs with 23 digs, in often spectacular fashion, in UH's four-set victory in the rematch. She's posted at least 20 digs three times this season and averages 3.90 per set, good for fourth in the conference. Her efforts in the back row have helped UH hold opponents to a .177 hitting percentage this season, the lowest mark in the Big West entering the week.
Reid put away a team-high 36 kills and averaged 4.00 per set in the series with Portland. Reid posted 18 kills in both matches and also served up three aces and was in on five blocks to contribute a team-high total of 41.5 points in the series. She posted her first career double-double in the opener with 18 kills and 10 digs. She contributed 18 more kills, seven digs and two aces on Friday. Reid, last week's Big West Offensive Player of the Week, now ranks third in the conference with 4.65 points per set and fourth with 3.71 kills per set.
The Rainbow Wahine (4-4) take a four-match winning streak with them to Northern California this week on their first road trip of the season. They'll face host and fourth-ranked Stanford on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Hawai'i Time. The 'Bows take on UCLA on Saturday (11 a.m. HT) and Texas State on Sunday (8 a.m. HT).
