Women's Volleyball Falls to San Jose State in Five

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team's comeback bid was eclipsed by San Jose State's late surge in a five-set loss to the Spartans on Thursday in the OUTRIGGER Invitational at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

Propelled by breakout performances freshman Cha'lei Reid and senior Bri Gunderson, the Rainbow Wahine rallied from two sets down to force a fifth. The 'Bows held a 12-9 lead in the decisive set before SJSU put together a 6-1 run to earn its first win of the season with the 25-23, 26-24, 19-25, 13-25, 15-13 decision.

San Jose State (1-3) picked up its first win in the series since 1993 and ended UH's 42-match winning streak against the Spartans. UH fell to 0-4 for the first time in program history heading into Friday's match with Utah Valley.

Reid powered the 'Bows' attack with a season-high 26 kills in 66 attempts. The freshman also had two aces and was in on two blocks.

Gunderson also helped fuel UH's rally with the most productive match since joining the program. The senior put away 15 kills on 22 swings, served up three aces and contributed five blocks of UH's seven blocks.

Outside hitter Stella Adeyemi had her second double-double of the season with 13 kills and 13 digs. Setter Adrianna Arquette also posted a double-double with 49 assists and 14 digs and fired four aces, three coming in an 11-0 UH run in the fourth set.

San Jose State was led by Morgan Graves with 13 kills.

With outside hitter and emotional leader Tali Hakas sidelined, freshman defensive specialist Kāhea Moriwaki made her first career start in the back row and sophomore middle blocker Maddie Way made her first start of the season.

San Jose State jumped out to a 6-1 lead and went on to an 11-for-16 start without an error. The Spartans led 22-14 but UH responded with a 9-1 run to tie it up at 23-23. A San Jose State kill halted the surge to earn set point and a UH error ended the set.

The 'Bows altered the rotation to go with a 6-2 lineup with setter Audrey Hollis joining Arquette on the court. The Spartans answered a UH run to move ahead 18-14. UH went on a 6-0 surge highlighted by Reid's ace to tie the set, and leapfrogged ahead 23-20. UH earned set point at 24-21, but SJSU rallied to score the final five points of the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

With SJSU up 12-11 in the third, Reid had four kills to spark a 7-1 UH run. Gunderson had back-to-back aces to stretch UH's lead to 23-16 and Adeyemi ended the set with her 10th kill of the night.

UH edged out to a 12-11 lead and took command with the 11-0 run highlighted by back-to-back blocks by Gunderson and three aces from Arquette.

UH took the early lead in the fifth and went up 12-9 after kills by Adeyemi and Miliana Sylvester. But SJSU went on a four-point run and took its first lead of the set on an ace and a block. The teams traded sideouts and the Spartans earned match point at 14-13. After a timeout, the Spartans came up with a block to end the match.

The tournament continues Friday with San Jose State facing St. John's at 4:45 p.m. and UH taking on Utah Valley (3-2) at 7 p.m.
