Igiede, Maglio to Compete in FIVB World Championship

HONOLULU — Two former University of Hawai'i All-America middle blockers are set to compete with their national teams in the 2025 FIVB World Championship starting Friday in Thailand.

Emily Maglio (2014-17) will play for Canada in the world championships and Amber Igiede (2019-23) was selected to the United States roster for the 20th edition of the event.

The U.S., currently seventh in the FIVB Women's World Ranking, is in Pool D along with Slovenia, Argentina and Czechia. Canada is ranked 12th in the world and is in Pool E with Türkiye, Bulgaria and Spain.

Igiede is among four middle blockers on the 14-player U.S. roster. She played in three weeks of the Volleyball Nations League earlier this summer, including the finals, and led the team with 21 blocks while hitting .451.

Maglio also played in the VNL and led Canada and ranked eighth in the tournament with 33 blocks. She was also second on the team with 123 total points while hitting .485.

The U.S. opens the World Championship on Friday against Slovenia in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, followed by Canada's match with Bulgaria. The top two teams in each of the tournament's eight pools advance to the playoff rounds in Bangkok, starting with the Round of 16 set for Aug. 29 to Sept. 1. The world championship will be decided in the medal rounds on Sept. 7.

Maglio was an AVCA All-America honorable mention selection as a UH junior in 2016 and made the third team in her senior season. Igiede was an All-America third-team pick in her junior and senior seasons with the Rainbow Wahine in 2022 and '23 and ranks fourth in program history with 528 total blocks. Igiede ranks third in career hitting percentage at .397 with Maglio fourth at .387.
