Rainbow Warriors Shut Out No. 7 Oregon State

HONOLULU – Three pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout to help the Hawai'i baseball team pick up a 5-0 win over No. 7 Oregon State before a sold-out Les Murakami Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Cooper Walls, Liam O'Brien and Isaiah Magdaleno stifled the Beaver bats all game long, striking out six while scattering three hits and working around six walks. Walls started and pitched five scoreless innings with five strikeouts while giving up two hits to earn the win. O'Brien followed with three hitless innings out of the bullpen before Magdaleno closed things down in the ninth.

The win is UH's third over a ranked team this season, equaling the most in a season by the program since 2014. It's also the first top-10 win by the program since Feb. 29, 2020 at No. 2 Vanderbilt. The Rainbow Warriors have also now won 13 of their last 14 Sunday home games and are out-scoring teams 116-34 over that stretch. Hawai'i is also 7-1 at home on Sundays this year, owning a 65-15 scoring margin in those games.

Matthew Miura got things going right away with a leadoff double to right field, later coming around to score on a Ben Zeigler-Namoa sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

Konnor Palmeira doubled the lead in the third by blasting his first homer of the year – a solo shot to left field – to make it 2-0. Miura delivered again in the fourth inning, this time with a two-out, two-run single that stretched the lead to 4-0, and Jared Quandt made it 5-0 with a run-scoring single in the fifth.

Miura, Shunsuke Sakaino and Kamana Nahaku all turned in two-hit games while Palmeira became the 13th different Hawai'i player to homer this year.

The announced sellout was the third consecutive one to start the series against the Beavers, marking the first time since 1995 that UH has sold out three straight games. The announced attendance of 4,406 ran the weekend total to 13,529, the highest total over a three-game weekend by the program since 1995.

The two teams close out their series Monday at 6:35 p.m. Tickets are still available online starting at $5 for upper level seats.
