Weather Stalls Racing On First Day Of ICSA Nationals

ST. MARY'S, Md. – The University of Hawaii women's sailing team made the long trek to the East Coast for the ICSA Women's Fleet Race National Championship only to find itself in a holding pattern for the majority of the first day of semifinal action on Tuesday.

Only five races were completed throughout the day as winds were virtually absent at St. Mary's River in Maryland. Rainbow Wahine sailors Vivian Bønsager and Stella Taherian took to the water in the A division while Malia Johnson and Sophia Shaeffer competed in the B division. UH totaled 68 points to stand in 16th place after day one.

The field of 36 teams from across the country are divided into two semi-finals groups of 18, with UH slotted in the Eastern fleet. The second and final day of the semifinal action will resume tomorrow with the top nine schools of each division moving on to the finals. The Rainbow Wahine, who qualified for the national championship tournament for the fourth consecutive year, and 22nd overall, look to advance to the finals round for the first time since the 2012 season. UH is currently 20 points off the pace from ninth.

This is UH's second trip to Maryland this Spring, having traveled to Maryland to compete in the St. Mary's Fleet Race where they finished eighth in a field of 18 schools in mid-March.
