HONOLULU – The Hawai'i baseball team fell victim to a late-innings rally in a series-opening 7-6 loss in 10 innings to Cal State Bakersfield Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
Leading 5-2 after six innings, the Rainbow Warriors would give up a single run in the seventh, two in the eighth and one each in the ninth and 10th to lose for the first time this year when leading after six frames.
After
Kamana Nahaku gave Hawai'i a 6-5 lead with an RBI single in the eighth inning, the 'Bows were a strike away from putting it away in the ninth when Michael Pollard lined a single into right center to tie it up.
CSUB then took the lead in the top of the 10
th when Brock Perreira ripped a one-out solo shot down the right field line to make it 7-6. The 'Bows were set down in order in the bottom of the inning, handing UH its sixth straight conference loss dating back to game two of the Cal Poly series.
The Roadrunners got on the board first, scoring single runs in the second and fourth to go up 2-0 before the 'Bows came roaring back in the fourth.
Jordan Donahue got things going with a leadoff walk before a single and error on a sacrifice bunt loaded the bases. Two batters later,
Matthew Miura broke through with a two-run knock to tie it up at two.
Shunsuke Sakaino gave UH the lead one batter later on a squeeze bunt and Takemoto helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly, making it 4-2.
Ben Zeigler-Namoa added to the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a one-out RBI single to plate Miura, making it 5-2.
The Rainbow Warriors and Roadrunners continue their series Saturday at 4:05 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
