SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – University of Hawai'i junior
Josh Hayashida recorded his best finish in the Western Intercollegiate after a final round 1-under 69 Wednesday at the famed Pasatiempo Golf Club.
The Mililani, O'ahu native, who was competing as an individual, completed the three-day tournament at 1-under 209 and tied for 11
th place. Hayashida recorded five birdies and four bogeys on his round and topped his previous best finish at the Western of 62
nd place.
San Diego State overtook Round 2 leader Pepperdine to capture the team title at 6-under 1,044 by five strokes over Stanford (1,049). Pepperdine finished in third place (1,056) followed by Nihon University of Japan (1,057) and UNLV (1,058). Arizona's Filip Jakubcik ran away with the individual title at 13-under 197 after a final round 66. UNLV's Caden Fioroni was runner-up at 7-under.
Playing as an individual, Hayashida was not part of UH's team score.
Tyler Ogawa led the way with a 4-over 74 and tied for 42
nd place at 6-over 216.
Garrett Takeuchi also shot 74 and carded 11-over 221 to tie for 60
th place.
James Whitworth and
Nathan Szpakowicz each posted 75 and tied for 70
th at 223. Also competing for UH were
Dane Watanabe (74=225, t-79
th) and
Anson Cabello (75=228, 81
st).
As a team, UH tied for 13
th place with Chattanooga at 1,108.
Hawai'i will next compete in the Big West Championship, April 27-29 in La Quinta, Calif.
