SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – University of Hawai'i senior
Tyler Ogawa carded a 2-over 72 in the opening round of the 78
th Western Intercollegiate Monday at the famed Pasatiempo Golf Club.
The senior from Honolulu was 1-under through 13 holes with birdies on Nos. 5 and 12 before faltering down the stretch with three bogeys over his last five holes. Ogawa is tied for 43
rd place heading into Tuesday's second round.
As a team, the Rainbow Warriors are tied for 13
th place at 17-over 367 in the play-six, count-five format. San Diego State leads the field at 12-under 338 followed by Arizona, Stanford, and Nihon University of Japan, who are all tied for second at 5-under 345.
A trio of UH golfers are tied for 61
st at 3-over 73 –
Nathan Szpakowicz,
James Whitworth, and
Garrett Takeuchi, the latter of whom placed second in Monday's long drive contest. Also competing for the 'Bows are
Anson Cabello and
Dane Watanabe, who are both tied for 80
th at 6-over 76.
Also competing as an individual is
Josh Hayashida, who shot 2-over 72 and is tied for 43
rd.
The tournament continues on Tuesday with tee times beginning at 8:00 a.m. PT. UH will be paired with UC Irvine and are scheduled to tee off at 11:00 a.m. PT. The Golf Channel will provide live coverage from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. PT (1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. HT) each day.
