Baseball Beats HPU to Open Week at Home

HONOLULU – The Hawai'i baseball team opened its week at home with a 10-8 win over Hawai'i Pacific Tuesday night at Les Murakami Stadium to move to 21-6 on the season.

UH used a five-run first inning to jump in front early on while newly named Golden Spikes Award National Player of the Week Kamana Nahaku led the way offensively, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

Ben Zeigler-Namoa got UH on the board with an RBI single before Nahaku made it 3-0 with a double. A Draven Nushida sacrifice fly made it 4-0 and an RBI groundout capped off the scoring in the frame.

The Sharks came back with a three-run homer in the second before the 'Bows answered with a single run in the third and three more in the fourth to make it 9-3.

HPU cut into the Hawai'i lead with two runs in the fifth but came back with a run in the bottom half, thanks to a Nushida RBI double to make it 10-5.

Nine Hawai'i pitchers saw action, with Freddy Rodriguez getting the start and picking up the win after pitching a scoreless first inning in the designated staff game. Max Jones worked 1.2 of scoreless relief while Zacary Tenn pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh inning.

The Rainbow Warriors turned two more double plays to run their season total to 31. Coming into Tuesday, UH was tied for the lead nationally in twin killings.

Tuesday was also the fifth straight game that Hawai'i scored nine or more runs, marking the first time a UH team has accomplished that since 1987 (9 straight).

The Rainbow Warriors host Long Beach State over the weekend starting Friday at 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
